Freshwater ecosystems under threat - A fight led by the Prince Albert II Foundation
Initiative
The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation plays a leading role in protecting freshwater resources, an essential component of biodiversity and human life. In a report produced by Monaco Info, the concrete action taken in the Mediterranean, particularly in Turkey, is brought to light.
The Foundation launched the Donors' Initiative forMediterranean Freshwater Ecosystems (DIMFE) in 2021, alongside the Aage V. Jensen Charity Foundation and the MAVA Foundation. Together, these partners are working to restore wetlands, preserve natural habitats and support local communities through innovative projects.

In Izmir, Turkey's third largest city, the Foundation supports the Doğa Derneği association in its efforts to restore the fragile ecosystems of the Gediz delta. Initiatives such as regenerative agriculture, sustainable pasture management and the direct involvement of local people demonstrate a deep commitment to a sustainable ecological transition.
‘Freshwater ecosystems are often forgotten, yet they are of vital importance to biodiversity and to mankind.’
- Philippe Mondielli, Scientific Director of the Prince Albert II Foundation
Through this project, the Foundation reasserts its determination to act, alongside its partners, in favour of responsible freshwater management and ecological resilience in the Mediterranean basin.
