Launch of the Decade for Cryospheric Science: The Foundation Joins Global Call to Action
Events
A significant step was taken in the global effort to protect the planet’s frozen regions as UNESCO hosted the first-ever World Glacier Day, marking the beginning of a historic Decade of Action for Cryospheric Science (2025–2034). The two-day gathering brought together leading experts, policymakers, and organizations committed to safeguarding the cryosphere—a critical component of Earth's climate system.
The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation actively participated in the event, contributing to high-level discussions on the urgent need to close the financing gap in cryospheric research and action. Representing the Foundation, Salomé Mormentyn, Manager of the Polar Initiative, emphasized the importance of international collaboration and inclusive dialogue across sectors.
“Our approach must ensure that scientists, policymakers, the private sector, and funders are working in concert to translate cryosphere science into tangible, on-the-ground solutions,” Mormentyn stated. She also highlighted the Foundation’s efforts to align global priorities through its partnerships with the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC).
This first mobilization under UNESCO’s leadership signals the beginning of a decade-long commitment to enhancing global cooperation, prioritizing scientific research, and advancing policy responses for the cryosphere. The Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco reaffirms its dedication to supporting this mission, working to foster cross-sector partnerships and drive meaningful environmental action.
As the world enters this critical Decade of Action, the Foundation remains resolute in its commitment to protecting polar and glacier regions—essential ecosystems at the frontline of climate change.
