Monegasque reforestation days

Monaco

The planting operation over an area of 4 hectares was the active symbol of Prince Albert II’s patronage in the “billion tree campaign” launched by the United Nations Environment Programme in Nairobi in November 2006, to prevent climate change and the damage and economic harm it causes.

This operation enabled a partnership between the Monaco Government, the Prince Albert II Foundation and the National Forestry Commission (ONF) to be initiated through the signing of a convention.

The Principality therefore was able to benefit from the ONF’s know-how as the managers of natural areas to head a series of projects both in France and internationally.

Today, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation is continuing in this vein by organising the “Monegasque Reforestation Days” from 29th March to 9th April 2008, together with various institutional and private partners from the Principality.

It will all kick off on Saturday 29th March with the traditional action campaign implemented by the Prince's Government and the Monegasque Association for the Protection of Nature (AMPN) at a replanting operation on recently burnt land on the southern slopes of Mont Gros, which will raise the awareness of school children in the Principality and Roquebrune Cap Martin.

On Monday 31st March, all the staff from the Grimaldi Forum Monaco will be mobilised on the same land. The replanting operation will support efforts currently undertaken by the Monegasque congress centre to obtain ISO 14 001 certification, making them one of the very first in Europe to adopt this environmental management system.

On Wednesday 2nd April, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation is launching a planting operation on 10 hectares of land as part of the awareness campaign conducted in conjunction with the International Athletic Foundation during the organisation of the Games of the Small States of Europe.

Within this area of land, on Friday 4th April, agents from the National Forestry Commission will implement the programme ''One birth = one tree'' launched by the Mairie of Monaco, the concept of which is simple: for each child born in the Principality starting from 1st January 2007, the Mairie pledges to plant a tree (929 trees are to be planted on the hills of the Principality, representing the number of births recorded in 2007).

On Monday 7th April, the Monegasque Employers’ Federation having decided to invest in an environmental project have chosen to take part in the “Monegasque Reforestation Days” by planting trees over 4 hectares of land on the south-eastern slopes of the “Tête de Chien”.

On Wednesday 9th April, the car manufacturer Toyota and its Monegasque agent will bring the event to a close. A partner in the organisation of the United Nations Environment Programme session that took place in Monaco, Toyota is keen to go a step further in its efforts for the planet, alongside the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, and has offered to plant 21 trees for each hybrid car it sells.

At the same time as the French Sustainable Development Week is underway, the Principality of Monaco, under the aegis of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, once again is setting the example for the preservation of the environment by planting more than 20 000 trees over the course of the “Monegasque Reforestation Days”.
