Events

In the frame of the first international conference of the Forests and Communities Initiative, to be held in the Principality from 21 to 23 November 2023, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation is inviting the public to an exceptional opening evening on Tuesday 21 November, in partnership with ARTE and Lato Sensu Productions.

On Tuesday 21 November at 7pm at the Grimaldi Forum, an episode of the documentary series "Our Forests" will be premiered in the presence of producer Muriel Barra and indigenous chiefs Hilarion Kassa Moussavou "Mambongo" (Gabon), Benki Piyãko (Brazil), Twyla Edgi Masuzumi (Canada), Mundiya Kepanga (Papua) and Tumursukh Jal (Mongolia).

The episode, "Brazil - Replanting the Amazon" about Benki Piyãko of the Ashaninka people, echoes the recent opening of the São Paulo branch of the Prince Albert II Foundation for Latin America. The screening will be followed by a round table discussion with representatives of indigenous peoples who are meeting for the first time as part of the "Our Forests #OurResponsibility" impact campaign run by Think-Film Productions and launched in parallel with the broadcast of the series.

Each leader is the main protagonist of an episode inviting us to discover and understand, through their eyes and their struggles, the issues surrounding the world's great primary forests - Amazonia, West Africa, Oceania, Central Asia and North America. Caciques, shamans, forest rangers, young leaders... the voices of indigenous peoples are heard as they defend the forest ecosystems on which not only their communities depend, but humanity as a whole. The documentary series "Our Forests" will be broadcast on ARTE on 9 December and will be available on arte.tv from 2 December.

An ad hoc preamble to the first international conference of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation's Forests and Communities Initiative, the theme of which is "Inclusive conservation: indigenous peoples and local communities at the forefront of forest protection". The programme for this private event, drawn up by the Initiative's partners - the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the World Commission on Environmental Law of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the International Ranger Federation (IRF), the Global Forest Coalition (GFC) and the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB) - includes a day and a half of exchanges with high-level speakers and guests from all over the world with a view to developing a call to action in favour of fairer and more sustainable models of forest conservation.

The Forests and Communities Initiative was created in 2022 in partnership with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law, the International Ranger Federation, the Global Forest Coalition and the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity. Its mission is to support conservation of forest ecosystems through the action of indigenous peoples and local communities (IP and LCs) and through the development of a supporting network of actors providing a multidisciplinary set of expertise. The Initiative's activities focus on the Congo Basin, the Amazon, South and South-East Asia and the Pacific Islands.
