The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Announces Partnership with FIS to Promote Biodiversity in Snow Sports
Monaco
Press release
The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation is proud to announce a new collaboration with the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) through its Human-Wildlife Initiative, reinforcing the shared commitment of both organisations to biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability.
Unveiled during the FIS Congress in Vilamoura, this partnership aims to ensure that the breathtaking—and often fragile—natural environments that host snow sports are also safeguarded for wildlife. By aligning science with sport, the collaboration seeks to balance the excitement of international competition with the pressing need to protect the ecosystems that make these disciplines possible.
Starting September 2025, the Foundation and FIS will conduct a pioneering biodiversity impact study focused on two of the most nature-connected disciplines: Alpine Skiing and Freeride. Major international competitions will serve as pilot cases to assess the environmental footprint of snow sports events and explore innovative, practical solutions to mitigate their impact.
“The objective is to assess the impact that snow sports events have on the natural areas around them and to devise solutions to lighten that footprint without taking anything away from the energy and excitement of ski and snowboard,” — Ester Borgioli, Coordinator of the Human-Wildlife Initiative, Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation
The partnership also recognises the importance of athlete engagement and public awareness as powerful drivers of change.
“The idea that true progress in sustainability can only be achieved together, by joining forces, is not just a slogan: we need credible, science-based partners if we want to make a difference for good. FIS and the Human-Wildlife Initiative will do that through research, but also by tapping into the incredible power of snow sports to raise awareness to the cause, including by giving a voice to our athletes as ambassadors,” — Susanna Sieff, FIS Sustainability Director
This collaboration reflects the Foundation’s ongoing mission to promote harmonious coexistence between human activities and wildlife, even in the most dynamic and competitive environments. It also marks an important step for the world of sport in advancing nature-positive practices.
