Initiative

In celebration of the International Week of Science and Peace, the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), and the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP) have proudly announced the recipients of their 2023 Antarctic Fellowships, including the join Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation SCAR Fellowship.

Each year, they come together to launch the annual Antarctic Fellowships, representing a significant investment in the professional growth of talented individuals, empowering them to make their contributions to Antarctic research.

Through its Polar initiative and partnership with SCAR, The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation continues its commitment to fostering capacity building. This collaboration began in 2022 and continues this year with the announcement of the 2023 Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation SCAR Fellowship.

The SCAR Fellowship Programme is designed to encourage the active involvement of early-career researchers in furthering our understanding of Antarctica. This year, a total of 33 applications were received for the SCAR early-career Fellowships.

The 2023 Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation SCAR Fellowship is awarded to Dieter Tetzner, representing the British Antarctic Survey, UK. His project, titled "Reconstructing past changes in the Southern Hemisphere Westerly Winds during the Last Glacial-Interglacial Transition (LGIT)" is set to take him to the UROCOLD Lab at the DISAT, University Milano-Bicocca, Italy. The project aims to deliver a centennially-resolved reconstruction of Southern Hemisphere Westerly Winds changes during the Last Glacial-Interglacial Transition, shedding light on the role of these winds in driving environmental changes in Antarctica during that period.

Since the launch of scientific fellowships for early career scientists in 2003, a total of 84 SCAR Fellowships, including one Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Fellowship, have been awarded, marking significant strides in Antarctic research.

Applications for the 2024 SCAR Fellowships will open next year.
