The 12th edition of the Monaco Blue Initiative took place on 22 March as part of Monaco Ocean Week, and under the high patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco. This high-level conference on ocean-related issues was held in a hybrid format and with the participation of numerous personalities, including Mr. John Kerry, Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, U.S. Department of State, Ms. Annick Girardin, Minister of Marine Affairs, France, Dr. Ricardo Serrão Santos, Minister of Maritime Affairs, Republic of Portugal, and Mr. Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries. More than 200 experts and leaders were invited to discuss the role of economic actors and the financial sector in the development of a truly sustainable blue economy, reconciling value and job creation with the preservation of the Ocean - topics of burning relevance in the context of the  economic recovery related to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We stand at a juncture where our world is preparing to rebuild itself, after a year of tragedy, crisis and uncertainty, and is seeking to do so in a more sustainable and more responsible manner. This reconstruction offers us an unprecedented window of opportunity.” HSH Prince Albert II said in His opening remarks.

Presidential Envoy John Kerry stressed that “Ocean stewardship and climate stewardship are really two sides of a single coin. We cannot protect the ocean without confronting the climate crisis. We cannot fight the climate crisis without the power of the ocean.”.

The summaries and key messages of this edition are available on the Monaco Blue Initiative website. The next edition of the MBI will take place on 20 and 21 March 2022 in Monaco."
