The government in Gabon recently solidified a decision to require FSC certification in all ~15 million hectares of forests managed by concessions by end 2022. Currently 2 million hectares are FSC certified. This decision by Gabon’s President is a milestone for responsible forest management in Central Africa and the Congo Basin.

Through this project, FSC will support the government of Gabon to implement the new policy. FSC will assist government officials involved to understand the full scope of FSC certification and the implications of the government’s decision for the forest sector in Gabon. FSC will also work with local partners to ensure that the FSC National Forest Stewardship Standards in Gabon meet the demands of the local context, and support concession managers to develop the technical skills necessary to meet FSC standards.
