The project is composed by three main activities. The first activity is aimed at performing a quantitative synthesis of the ecological and socio-economic performances of Mediterranean MPAs, and at identifying the existing gaps. One major gap concerns the organizational perspective. MPAs show strong differences in their organizational features:

1) strategy

2) networking

3) structure

Such differences are likely to affect MPAs’ management and cascade down to influence their ecological and social-economic performances. A specific study has never been done yet and, from this perspective, there is no overlap with any previous or ongoing research.

The second activity, consequently, is aimed at investigating the relationships between organizational features and the performance of about 20 Mediterranean MPAs. Available data is summarized and new data is collected by means of questionnaires to ‘key informers’ and in situ visits.

The third is dedicated to scientific dissemination and communication. At least three international papers and two oral communications at international congresses guarantee dissemination.
