The Maya Biosphere Reserve (MBR) in Guatemala is the most extensive protected region of Central America and one of the richest biodiversity reserves. It plays a key role in the conservation of biodiversity by mitigating the potential impact of climate change, by sequestering millions of tonnes of carbon and by providing ecosystem services such as the production of fresh water.

This programme suggests implementing incentive, financial and technical measures, in return for explicit conservation commitments with regard to key regions of the MBR. It has given financial support to an agreement on pilot incentive measures in several villages of the region.
